PRESBYTERIAN CHURCH AT SMYTHESDALE 1859 |
---|
This Church was commenced in February, this year. It is situated on the rising ground near Frazer's Hotel, and about half a mile from the township of Smythesdale.
It is 40 feet by 18 feet with a porch and vestry. A bell of one hundred weight decorates the exterior, and its holy music will be heard a distance of three or four miles. The interior is exceedingly elegant, and will accommodate about four hundred.
Since the erection prayers have been delivered every second Sunday, and the officiating minister is the Rev. John Gow, of Pitfield, Woady Yalloak, who apparently possesses all the requisites essential in a Minister of the Gospel, and at whose individual expense, the erection has been built.
The congregation at present numbers 300, but as there are more than three times that number of Presbyterians in the Smythesdale district, it is almost certain when the erection is finished that number will be doubled. The building will cost about £300. The contractor is Mr. James Mahon.
I hope ere long it will be my pleasing duty to chronicle the erection of other churches for other Christian denominations, or else I hope to be able - what I cannot truthfully do now - to refer with pride to the improvement in the religious edifices, and services already established herein.
